4 Easy Ways to Split Test Your Products on Shopify

4 EASY WAYS TO SPLIT TEST YOUR PRODUCTS ON SHOPIFY

For the longest time, Shopify users have asked “How do I split test my shopify store?” and there hasn’t been a simple, cheap or easy solution.

Zyber has recently released a powerful app that is both affordable, easy, and most importantly - is done all within your Shopify store. No more expensive third-party websites needed!

Why should I be split testing? The main reason is to find out where you can be making money! Certain words, colours and price points influence whether or not your shopper becomes a customer. Get ahead of the game and find what encourages shoppers to purchase more, before your competitors do.

What can I split test on Shopify? With this app, you can split test your Product Title, Product Description, Primary Image, and most importantly - Price.

Below you’ll find how to split test each section, along with best practice split testing tips.

Split Test Tutorial for Shopify [1:30]

Split Testing Your Product Title

If your shopper is just browsing, this is the part of your listing that will make them want to click to learn more. If your title is boring they’ll scroll on by, or even worse - leave your website and not give you a second thought.

If your shopper is looking for something specific, the product title needs to be crystal clear so they can scan it in a split second and know that it’s what they’re looking for.

A lot of dropshippers on Shopify will use the default title from the supplier. Don’t make the same mistake! There is often too many keywords jammed in the title. The title then becomes unreadable, loses the customer's trust, and devalues your store brand. You should only be using technical terms in your product title if your product requires model or part numbers to be found on the internet.

BEST PRACTICE

    • Use a keyword in your title
    • Write your own titles! Don’t use the supplier’s default title unless your product needs to be found via part or model numbers
    • Keep your titles clear and concise. Don’t use filler words in your titles
    • Don’t include SKU numbers. Most themes will display this on the product page automatically anyway

    Split Testing Your Description

As a Shopify Expert I see far too many Shopify stores selling hundreds of products without detailed descriptions. The description is the perfect opportunity to turn your browsers into customers. The product description is a place where you can describe how your product will solve their problems.

The majority of product descriptions I come across only include technical information like the size, weight, and material of the product. This kind of information is fine to have, but you’re really missing out on a prime selling location if you don’t include more. If you’re dropshipping on Shopify, make sure you add descriptions to the products you import to your store.

You could split test a more technical description vs. a more descriptive description to see what your customers prefer to read about before they buy.

    Trust Badge for Shopify

You can even include a trust badge in your description to see if that boosts your sales by providing your customer with proof that your store is safe to purchase from.

    BEST PRACTICE

      • Try to mention why your product will benefit them and solve their problem
      • It’s ok to include technical information, but make sure it’s not the only thing in your description
      • Experiment with including a trust badge in your description
      • Include a video in one of your descriptions
      • Test a small block of text vs. a larger block of text

      Split Testing Your Price

Every store owner wants to know if they can be selling their product for more. With the A/B Split Test App you can do just that!

One user tested a small change in price - from 6.95 to 7.95. The user found that conversions were nearly identical - so he decided to raise his price and start another split test at a higher price again.

Another user split tested his original price was $350 and raised the test price to $490. The $490 price tag sold SEVEN times more than the original $350 price.

We recommended that if you’re getting a small amount of traffic to your site, then make big split test changes, but if you’ve got a large number of traffic on your site, then it’s best to split test smaller changes.

      BEST PRACTICE

        • Test a bigger difference in price if you have a low level of traffic
        • Test a smaller increase in price if you have a high level of traffic

        Split Testing Your Primary Image

Much like the title, your product image is what draws the customer’s eye to your product listing. It needs to be easily understandable, clear, of good quality, and optimised.

Images that show a person using or wearing your product allow your shopper to visualise how they could use it or wear it themselves. These type of images are called ‘lifestyle photos’.

Most stores use only the plain background or clearcut product image, which makes it trickier for your customer to visualise the product in their lives.

It’s also important that your images are big enough to see finer details, free from dropshipping watermarks, and are optimised so they don’t slow down your store.

        BEST PRACTICE

        • Test an image where a person is involved with the product compared to an image where there is no person present
        • Test your product on a clear cut background as well as on a background or in an environment/scene

        SUMMARY

Split testing is an important aspect of selling online as it allows you to fully optimise your store for making sales. By split testing your price, title, description, and primary image, you’ll be able to see what it is exactly that makes your browsing traffic buy and become happy customers.
